It looks like December 21, 2012 may not hold in store the Apocalypse many fear the Mayan calendar predicts.

According to southcoasttoday.com, recently Micaela Ventura Daykeeper (Mayan Priestess) spoke to a crowd of about 30, and had this to say about 2012: It’s not the end of the world.

Ventura, who is a daykeeper (or Mayan priestess) in-training from Guatemala, spoke on invitation by the Native American committee of the Rod & Gun Club of New Bedford. Her appearance at the Dartmouth club was coordinated by Oxib’ B’atz’, a New Bedford nonprofit organization for Central American women.

With Dr. Lisa Maya Knauer of UMass Dartmouth serving as a translator, Ventura said Mayans aren’t predicting annihilation this December.

Rather, she explained, this will mark the end of a more than 5,000-year cycle. And though she referred to the conclusion of one “world” and the start of another, it’s more metaphorical — the kick-off to what she described as a new epoch.

As for any forecasted disasters, Ventura said disasters happen already. Take global warming, for example, or torrential rains in South America — all of them, she said, the result of human actions and signifying a wake-up call to mankind.

As Ventura spoke, she echoed others who have tried debunk an end-of-days prediction gone viral.

End of the world predictions have always been around; however, with the Mayan 2012 being interpreted as an apocalypse by some, it is worth looking at what other sources have predicted.

With 2012 upon us, it is interesting to look the worlds major religions Apocalypse predictions:

Christianity: Book of Revelations, Jesus will descend, collect the believers and the rest of the world will face apocalyptic times.
Hinduism: Hindus believe that we’re currently living in the last of four cycles or “yugas” called the Kali Yuga, at the end end of which Shiva will destroy and then regenerate the universe.
Judaism: All-in, the Jewish version of the end of days sounds pretty nice. In the Hebrew Bible the Book of Isaiah tells of a Messiah who will return to earth and restore all Jews to the homeland where they will live in peace and joy forever.
Buddhism: Apparently traditional Buddhism believes that human nature and physical humans evolve in tandem, and that we’re currently shrinking; whereas we used to live for 80,000 years, we’re headed to a place when the average life-span will be 10 years. After descending into some kind of apocalyptic sword-wielding fight to the death, a few survivors will gradually begin to live longer and happier over eons, to the point where we’ll live to 80,000 years again.
Islam: The sayings of Muhammad tell of the Day of Judgement. The Quran also talks in places of cataclysmic earthquakes that will rip the Earth apart.

Can Astrology make fortunes in the stock market? Some think so with many Astrologers giving daily market horoscopes.

As recently written by forbes.com, what if the movement of the planets in relation to Earth could foretell whether an investment will be a boom or a bust? And what if you could use that information like technical and fundamental data to pick when to enter a market?

Every investor wishes they had a crystal ball.

Last month, I ran a feature story here about financial astrology: how it works, and who was buying the information. This is as close as one can get to having that crystal ball.

In the U.S., there are only a handful of so-called financial astrologers. They help business owners and investors decide when to enter a market, when to file for an IPO and even the right time of day to mail out important letters to clients.

Most of these financial gurus are from India and Europe, where there is a wider acceptance of their — calling, as they might describe it. They even have their own trade association, the International Association for Astrological Research, located in Los Angeles, welcomes all astrologers, not just those interested in capital gains.

For the financial fortune tellers in the U.S., their out-of-this world research is used by individual investors and brokers as a compliment to traditional analysis. I asked them for some investment advice for Forbes readers.

One man I spoke with is Mahendra Sharma from Santa Barbara. He told me he was involved with astrology since he was 8 and learned to read birth charts from his grandfather. Throughout much of the 1990s, he made political and societal predictions from his small corner of the world in South Africa. “I stopped making those kind of predictions in late 1995 because I didn’t think they were of any value and not really helping anyone,” he said. “I decided to turn to making financial forecasts and put $17,000 into American dot-com companies. I held it for four years and made a lot of money before it crashed.”

Sharma says he forecast oil to reach $100 when it was just $16, and said it would happen by 2007. He also forecast gold to go over $1,000 when it was just $275 an ounce. In early January 2009, he went on CNBC and predicted the stock market would bottom at some point in the first week of March. The S&P 500 went as low as 666 on March 6, 2009.

Truth be told, even earthly forecasters like Doug Kass, a popular contributor at The Street and president of Seabreeze Partners Management in Palm Beach called the lows in the S&P 500. Was he using financial astrology as a guide?

If he was, it wasn’t Sharma’s.

Sharma’s Astrology Predictions for the stock market this year point to a continued bull market in U.S. stocks.

Is it just a guess? Here’s what the stars say about the markets. Mark your calendars and watch the markets to see if Sharma’s calls are accurate.

Between April 15 and June 26, the position of the sun bodes well for commodities up until May 15. This, he said, will cause a price spike in agricultural commodities, most likely the grains, coffee, cotton and probably sugar. He recommends buying commodity based exchange traded funds like PHLX Gold/Silver (XAU) and the Gold Bugs Index (HUI), or buying futures contracts for that particular commodity. The CRB Index will move towards new highs on the year in this period to mid-May.

While this may sound ridiculous to some, Sharma is not using Barclays and Goldman Sachs data to make his calls. He is not a Chartered Financial Advisor, nor does he have a PhD in economics. Sharma’s calls are coming from high tech astrological software like Galactic Trader, and — perhaps — the gift of understanding the stars.

If he is right, gold investors will likely see gold futures price over $2,000 an ounce before May 14. They are currently $1,620 for the April gold futures contract.

But after mid-May, all of these short term positives will change. Venus comes into play in the U.S. astrological birth chart and the market will correct. “If you’re in commodities, and if you’re in financial or housing stocks in particular, this will be a time to book profits,” he said. New buying opportunities won’t present themselves for the market until mid-August.

Call this the obvious summer slowdown, but Sharma said that between August and Oct. 3, U.S. telecom and technology stocks will start to spike. He warns of some negative news in those markets by Sept. 24, “but stay with it, the negative sentiment won’t last.”

“Hold your money in U.S. equities for the next three years and you will enjoy one of the greatest run ups in equity prices in history, and will be buying on the cheap,” he said. “The planetary positions are very positive for the U.S. stock market. Even if you are invested in Brazil or China or Russia, you should be watching the S&P for direction. In 2012, wherever the S&P goes, that’s where the rest of the world will go as well.”

Another financial Astrologer Grace K. Morris, located in Chicago uses complex planetary cycles in their Astrological Predictions for the stock market.

Between January and June 12, 2012, Morris has recommendations out on dozens of names in various sectors of the economy, dependent on where Jupiter sits in the constellations for those particular companies based on when they were incorporated, or “born”.

Looking at just one random sector, consumer durables and apparel, Morris favored Lululemon Athletica (LULU) in that six month period. To date, the stock is up 61.94%. She also liked Under Armour (UA), up 32.11% and Fossil, Inc. (FOSL), up 68.83%. Each one of them has outperformed the S&P 500 by a wide margin.

“This year started out with Jupiter in the middle of Taurus, which means the first six months of 2011 have given us a heads up on the success of the favored sectors,” said Morris. “Those same sectors will continue to provide the most profitable stocks in the first six months of 2012, and that’s going to be retail, consumer durables, food and beverage as well as technology and agriculture. They will all do well in the first half of the year.”

What traditional market analysts call a major rotation, Morris and the like call a planetary cycle change.

Could it be that mixing traditional stock forecasting with something a bit more out-of-this world will help investors decide when to enter the market? And if so, can it help investors beat the market? Picking from just one random sector in Morris’s self-published 75 page book on outperforming stock picks for 2012, the answer for the galactic trader is yes.

“I normally only play my lucky numbers in Saturday Gold Lotto but last week, I had a feeling that I should buy a QuickPick entry as well.

“I’m so glad I did as that was the winning ticket.”

The winning numbers were 1, 15, 16, 21, 28 and 2 with supplementary numbers 35 and 40 with the family winning the top prize of $1.37 million.

It was the randomly-generated machine numbers that gave the family a win, instead of those chosen by the family.

A Psychic Medium recently tipped off police investigators in the case of missing Louisiana man Earl “Bubba” Kidder, which has led to a renewed search for the man who has been missing for over two years.

A recent article by dailyworld.com, talks about the renewed search in the disappearance of Louisiana man Earl “Bubba” Kidder after a Psychic tip.

This week, however, it looked as though some questions finally were going to be answered when a psychic tip led to a promising situation.

“(Kidder’s father) said he had spoken to someone — a psychic, actually — that suggested that we needed to renew our efforts and look in another direction for his son. His body hasn’t been found, so I said I would do anything I could,” St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said.

Guidroz contacted the Pointe Coupee Parish sheriff’s office and enlisted the Patterson Police Department “who has one of the best cadaver dogs in the state” to sniff out the tip.

The agencies went out to a fishing camp in Pointe Coupee Parish this week and swept the area. The cadaver dog identified a methane odor, and the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab and LSU Anthropology Department were contacted to probe and dig for remains.

Kidder’s remains were not found at the end of the search but the police have hope that more tips will come in to help restart the case.

“We’re back at square one, but I’ll tell you, anytime a parent or concerned loved one says, ‘A psychic gave me this information. Will you please exhaust this?’ I will, because it’s hope for the family,” Guidroz said.

When Guidroz was a state trooper years ago, he worked at least one investigation that utilized a tip from a psychic. That tip led to a successful break in the case. He has confidence in some psychic ability, especially when it looks as though all other hope is lost.

“I, for one, know that some psychics have an ability and have a gift, and we’re going to use that ability to help us,” Guidroz said.

His family last saw Kidder on March 26, 2010 when he left for a fishing trip in the Sherburne Wildlife Management Area. Accompanying him on the trip were Chad Pitre and Riki Armand.

Family members have said Kidder called his mother to say he was having a good time fishing but never returned home.

Kidder’s companions say they left the area to go home before he did and have not seen him since then.

State Wildlife and Fisheries agents searched for him for a few days and then turned the case over to the Pointe Coupee

Parish Sheriff’s Office, where the camp is located.

The case would move south to St. Martin Parish a few days later, when the car Kidder was believed to be using was found badly burned just across the parish line in another camp.

At the time, police said the car was so badly burned that arson was suspected.

Louisiana’s St. Landry Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to answers about Kidder’s disappearance.

Routine I wake up at 7am. I do my stretches and then I go to my exercise room. I have a table on my exercise bike so I can write and work there. I am very active all day and I go to bed about midnight.

First memory I was born in British-occupied Israel and there was a police station across the road from our apartment. When I was six months old a soldier shot bullets into my room. I was in a pram under a window and the glass shattered, but luckily there was a tiny teddy bear covering my face, which saved me. I can remember it all. Ever since then I have gravitated towards teddy bears, they are like my talismans. I collect them, like this very old one (pictured) from the 1920s.

Spoons I was eating soup when I was five and the spoon bent until it broke. That was the first time it happened. My mother thought that it was a talent, like playing the piano. The other kids thought I was a freak. I didn’t know then that I would conquer the world. I have bent spoons for lots of friends and people I meet – I bent one for an American guy called Stevie Wood in 1973 and he had it mounted in a glass box. Years went by and we lost contact, but about three years ago I saw the same spoon (pictured) on eBay, so I bought it.

Television David Dimbleby launched my career. He had read a small article about a young Israeli who was being studied by the CIA at Stanford Research Institute and he invited me on to his talk show in 1973. At one point I looked into the camera and said, ‘You people at home, go and get your spoons, bring your broken watches to the TV set.’ When their spoons bent all around the country, that was it: that made Uri Geller.

Controversy I realised that there is no such thing as bad publicity when I was invited to do the Johnny Carson Show in America the same year as the Dimbleby programme. I failed; the spoon bent very little and I was humiliated. I thought I was finished. But the next day Merv Griffin – he was a huge presenter – said he saw me on Carson and he wanted me on his show too. I knew then how precious and priceless controversy is.

Designer chair I met Yves Saint Laurent in Paris in 1974 through some friends. He gave me two scarves, which I still have. And I have one of his chairs (pictured), which I bought at auction in 2009. My daughter saw two chairs were up for sale, but the first one went for $28 million so I said forget it, I’ll never be able to afford it. But then somehow the hammer fell and I got the second one for a sum I could afford – I’m not telling you how much – and there it is.

Weddings I met Hanna in my early twenties in Israel. We got married in a spiritual wedding under the sky, but it wasn’t legally binding. So we also got married in a register office in Budapest. We wanted a Jewish wedding too, so in 2001 we got married in a synagogue and Michael Jackson was my best man.

Meeting of minds I met Salvador Dalí in New York in the 1970s and I knew him for about two years. I bought this elephant sculpture (pictured) later to remind me of him. I really don’t know if he was influenced by me – but you see in his paintings that he bent clocks and I was known for bending spoons and fixing broken watches. He had this pocket watch that never worked and I said, ‘Look! One, two, three!’ And it worked. It freaked him out. That’s where we had this mutual understanding. I was bending metal with the power of my mind and he was bending metal with paintbrushes.

Electronic help I always have my BlackBerry with me and I constantly answer emails – I get about 300 a day from fans. I’m getting hundreds from people in Greece right now.

Regal seat My mother was a seamstress and we were very poor. We lived in a tiny one-bedroom apartment. My only ambition was to be rich and famous. My first mission was to stop my mother from working and buy her a television. She told me once that only a king sits on a marble toilet, so I got her one of those too. She lived with us here until she died in 2005.

Barney My father surprised me with a puppy in a shoebox when I was five and ever since then I’ve had dogs. My current dog, Barney, is a greyhound and I’ve had him since I rescued him 10 years ago. But he is dying; it is very upsetting. He can’t walk and he just looks you in the eye. I think we will have to put him to sleep soon. I will bury him under the willow tree in my garden.

Positive energy Crystals emanate and absorb energy. I’ll never forget when I was with Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson the day before the September 11 attacks. We were in Madison Square Garden and she gave me a big rock crystal and honestly I felt an energy from it. I have crystals all around the house and two enormous, ancient ones either side of the door (pictured). They give me protection and energy.

Religion Every door in my house has a mezuzah – inside it there is a card with a hand-written prayer. I do not observe all the Jewish rituals, but overall I am a believer. I think you are born religious.

Hanging out I have a machine that turns me upside down. I’ve had it for about 35 years. All your life you’re upright. I think I still have my hair because I’ve been hanging upside down every night.

Brazilian Psychic Medium Joao de Deus (John of God)

As recently reported by dawn.com, the story of Brazilian Psychic Surgeon John of God is told; every week using mainly his hands but also armed with scissors, a knife and scalpel, Joao Teixeira de Faria, a self-styled Brazilian medium and “psychic surgeon,” treats thousands of sick people.

Among the thousands who claim to have been cured by the healer known as “John of God” is Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the popular Brazilian ex-president, now said to be in remission from larynx cancer.

“I am going to cure you,” de Faria told one young woman during a session in the small town of Abadiania in the central state of Goias. After going into a trance, he stuck a four-centimeter (nearly two-inch) needle into the sole of her feet.

“Don’t look, it’s going to hurt,” he warned her as he thrust the needle in several times.

The young woman apparently felt nothing and when it was over, the nearly illiterate faith healer flashed a big smile.

His patient, visibly moved, extolled that she had just been cured from a chronic illness which doctors could not treat.

Born on June 24, 1942, de Faria is an adept of spiritism, a religious doctrine based on the belief in the survival of a spirit after death.

Founded in the 19th century by Frenchman Allan Kardec, spiritism today is particularly popular in Brazil, where it has nearly three million followers.

The healer’s entourage said de Faria paid several visits to the former president when he was being treated at a Sao Paulo hospital for a larynx cancer.

Lula however has refused to confirm or deny press reports that he met at least three times in Sao Paulo with the healer.

American TV show hostess Oprah has also visited the town to film the crowds who gather around the healer.

“John of God” says he communicates with spirits when he goes into a trance.

He diagnoses diseases, prescribes medication and conducts surgeries, either

with his hands, or with kitchen knives, scalpels or scissors.

“Since the age of eight, God has given me this energy. I don’t heal. God heals,” the spiritual healer told AFP during a brief respite.

He receives about 1,000 people a day, three times a week and more than half of them are foreigners.

The ritual is always the same: the faith healer sits in a big armchair, his feet on a cushion. In front of him and in adjacent rooms, several hundred followers and so-called mediums meditate to form an energy circle.

One by one, the patients then parade before de Faria who treats them, gives them instructions or calls them to come back for a surgery or treatment, often in less than a minute.

Miracle man or charlatan? 

In one operation, performed without anesthetics, the medium opened up the eye of one patient and began scratching it with a knife, according to Reinaldo Daher, an orthopedic doctor who witnessed the operation.

“You could hear the scraping. The patient did not flinch and he told him: ‘You are healed, you can go,’” Daher told AFP.

He fervently believes in the healer’s powers. “I have to believe because I have seen it,” he said.

But some, particularly in the medical establishment, are wondering whether de Faria is a miracle man or a charlatan.

“We have a major dilemma in Brazil. The constitution guarantees freedom of faith, which makes it difficult to take any actions against illegally practicing medicine or charlatanism,” Emmanuel Fortes, audit director of the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine, told AFP.

“I arrived in 2006 with multiple sclerosis diagnosed in 1999. I had been in a wheelchair. And now you can see, I am cured and I can walk. My symptoms are gone,” said Marina, a New York-based Russian woman who now comes several times a year to work as a medium and a guide in Abadiania.

For the past 35 years, John has been receiving patients and admirers in this small town where the economy revolves around his healing center.

There are more than 40 inns and dozens of taxis operating shuttle services to and from Brasilia airport.

There is no charge for the treatment. His center maintains that its income comes from donations, sales of natural remedies and purified water.

But the skepticism from the Brazilian establishment remains.

“Operations in a contaminated environment and unnecessary therapies at religious events are illegal,” the vice president of the Federal Council of Medicine of Brazil, Vital Carlo, told Globo television.

T.A. Powell

Author T.A. Powell started the quest of writing a book about the 45-year-old unsolved murder of a federal agent in south Georgia; however, after a short time she reached a dead end – until she contacted a Psychic Medium and spoke to the dead man himself.

As recently reported by chronicle.augusta.com, the connection with the dead came through a psychic. That is the source, she said, that awakened her desire to finish the book.

Powell, a Watkinsville resident with one published book about an unsolved crime, won’t publicly name the psychic, but the Atlanta resident has provided the nuggets of information that could help solve the slaying of Alcohol, Tobacco and Treasury agent Charles Gordon Covington in October 1966 in Valdosta, she said.

Two or so more chapters remain to be written, and the book, “The Coffee Pot Conspiracy,” will be ready for publication in the near future, according to Powell.

But how did Powell, a professional theater director, start writing books on unsolved crimes and form a friendship with a psychic?

The chain of events happened, she said, while she was working on the play “Waiting For Dark.” She told her costume maker she needed an old refrigerator, and the woman had one.

“I’ll make you a deal,” Powell recalls the woman saying.

“I will give you the refrigerator if you write something about a local tragedy out near my home.”

That tragedy was the unsolved slayings of four black people in 1946 at the Moore’s Ford Bridge in Walton County. The book, “The Danburg Diary,” takes actual events from the Moore’s Ford killings along with another slaying and molds the two crimes into a novel, said Powell, who grew up in Iowa.

Shortly before publication of “The Danburg Diary,” Powell was asked to speak about investigative reporting to a class in the Cold Case Research Institute at Bauder College in Atlanta because students also were examining this same unsolved crime.

In the process of  T.A. Powell’s lecture, she chose to read an excerpt from the Psychic book, which was not yet released.

“I explained this excerpt was a kind of ‘Deep Throat’ situation where you receive information from a person who initially did not wish to identify themselves,” she said, telling students that she refers to her source only as “J.”

A swell of whispers filled the classroom, she recalled. Two weeks earlier, a psychic spoke to the class and made a prediction: The students would receive significant information about the Moore’s Ford case from an energy known as “J.”

Intrigued, Powell soon met the psychic, whom she said has worked with police on other unsolved cases. They formed a friendship, and through this unlikely source, Powell began working anew on the book about the slain agent.

While Powell had reams of information about the agent’s death from old court documents and newspaper clippings, the psychic’s information pushed the story further.
